THE SHORT VERSION

Three things we keep an eye on

Community engagement

The charity work here is local, hands-on and, more often than not, involves cooking for people who are not our guests.

Environment and biodiversity

We sit on a bay that other people also use. It is our duty to respect and take care of it!

Health and safety

Most of our guests eat every meal with us, and a good number of them are children. We maintain a high health & safety workplace with yearly staff training sessions and seminars carried out.

ENERGY

Cutting the energy we use

Winter 2023 to 2024: the roofs of the main building and the apartment blocks were insulated, and 300 kW of photovoltaics were installed.

Winter 2024 to 2025: more insulation, and the air conditioning systems through the main building were replaced with higher efficiency systems.

The cost of this investment was about €500,000, out of which €150,000 was subsidised under the Cyprus Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry plan for energy-saving investments by small and medium businesses, under EU Regulation 651/2014.

PLASTIC

No more single-use plastics!

Single-use plastic items have been removed in 2021 and been replaced by other more eco-friendly alternatives as shown below.

THE BEACH

A Blue Flag beach at the end of the path

The beach in front of us flies a Blue Flag. On the official records it is listed as Skoutarospilioi, however nowadays it is commonly known as Malama Beach.

The Blue Flag award highlights the water quality, safety and accessibility, of Malama Beach! Cyprus was awarded 56 Blue Flags for 2026. 18 are in Paralimni and Deryneia, the stretch of coast either side of us, so there are plenty of excellent options in the area.

The water helps. In the European Environment Agency’s assessment of the 2025 season, every coastal bathing water in Cyprus came back rated excellent.

FUNDING

Projects with public funding

Three of the projects above were part-funded, which comes with an obligation to say so publicly. Here they are.

Promotion of Circular Economy in Hotels and Tourist Accommodations. We took part in this measure, which helps Cypriot hotels and tourist accommodation move to a green and circular economy. It is funded by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, under the Cyprus Recovery and Resilience Plan for 2021 to 2026.

Plan for the Promotion of Investments in Energy Saving by SMEs and NGOs. Our application was approved by the Cyprus Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry. Subject to the terms of the plan, the hotel is entitled to a subsidy of up to €150,000 under EU Regulation 651/2014. The investment it supports is worth about €500,000 and is described in full above.

Plan for the Digital Upgrade of Businesses. Approved by the same ministry in 2023. It covered €18,000 of new software and hardware, half of which is eligible for funding under the plan. The project was completed in 2024.
